HISTORY
The
Lutheran Church is part of the one, holy, Christian and Apostolic
church established by Jesus Christ. We trace our history back
to the time of the New Testament and confess the biblical doctrines
summarized in the Apostles' Creed.
Lutheranism as a movement within the Christian Church is traditionally
dated as beginning on October 31, 1517, the day the Rev. Dr. Martin
Luther posted the 95 theses to the door of the castle church in
Wittenberg, Germany protesting abuses he felt existed in the church
of that day.
Through his study of the Bible, Luther helped the Christian Church
rediscover the truth that God is loving and that He offers forgiveness
and eternal life as a free gift because of Jesus Christ. Luther
taught that people - no matter how hard they try - cannot earn
God's forgiveness or a place in heaven. It is a gift that people
receive through faith in Jesus Christ

THE EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH IN CANADA
The Lutheran Church arose from the period of the Reformation during
which Martin Luther attempted to reform the existing Church.
The result is a Lutheran community numbered approximately 70
million worldwide. This Lutheran denomination is expressed in
mar different ways and, in Canada, there are several different
expressions of Lutheranism. We are proud to be one of about 650
congregations of the Evangelical
Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC).
